Oral pindolol produced a highly significant hypotensive effect at 2 and 16 months in essential hypertension, driven initially by decreased cardiac output and later by decreased vascular resistance.
Why the study?
Does oral pindolol reduce blood pressure and alter haemodynamics in patients with essential hypertension?
Does oral pindolol reduce blood pressure and alter haemodynamics in patients with essential hypertension?
Pindolol lowers blood pressure in essential hypertension initially via decreased cardiac output and long-term via decreased vascular resistance.
Supports time-dependent hemodynamic shifts with pindolol in hypertension; leaves open comparative effectiveness versus current agents.
SummaryTen patients (mean age 48 years) with essential hypertension were studied before and during oral treatment with the beta-adrenoceptor blocking agent, pindolol. A highly significant hypotensive effect was recorded after 2 months and after 16 months of treatment. Comparison of the results from these two occasions suggests that a decrease in cardiac output is an early mechanism in the lowering of the blood pressure, while a decrease in vascular resistance seems to be more important after long-term treatment with pindolol.

Atterhög et al. (1977) studied essential hypertension (n=10). pindolol vs. baseline was evaluated on hypotensive effect. Oral pindolol produced a highly significant hypotensive effect at 2 and 16 months in essential hypertension, driven initially by decreased cardiac output and later by decreased vascular resistance.
