14 MeV neutrons have a lower relative biological effectiveness than 200 kVp x-rays for depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides in synovial fluid and connective tissue.
Hypothesis-generating for neutron RBE in connective tissues; does not support changes to clinical radiotherapy.
Summary14 MeV neutrons show a RBE smaller than 1 with reference to 200 kVp x-rays for viscosity-decrease of synovial fluid and for increase of water-permeability of connective-tissue membranes. In synovial fluid the influence of oxygen and a number of chemoprotectors on the irradiation-effects is less in the case of the radiation with the higher LET. The OER is smaller than 1 for both types of radiation. Chemical protection of connective-tissue membranes against the effect of x-rays and fast neutrons is only considered in a qualitative way.
