What happened
Metformin shows no cardiovascular benefit in patients with HFrEF or established IHD.
Why the trial, key points, tables, limitations, PICO, abstract, media & sources
Why the trial?
Evidence for metformin's cardiovascular effects rests largely on observational studies and small trials. This meta-analysis pooled the randomised evidence in heart failure and ischaemic heart disease to test whether the drug's presumed cardiovascular benefit holds.
Does metformin improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and established ischaemic heart disease?
Statistical certainty
no pooled effect estimate, patient count or trial count is reported in the record.
Design limitations
record is derived from the ESC press release presented alongside Met-HeFT, with no publication captured in-world.
Does metformin improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and established ischaemic heart disease?
A meta-analysis confirms that metformin does not significantly improve cardiovascular outcomes in patients with HFrEF or established ischaemic heart disease.

Expert labels are toward Met-HeFT meta-analysis's result, from named public quotes (n=0). As of Oct 31, 2026.
The pooled analysis agrees with Met-HeFT: no significant cardiovascular benefit from metformin in HFrEF or established ischaemic heart disease.
This meta-analysis pooled studies of metformin in heart failure and ischaemic heart disease and was presented in Hot Line 6 at ESC Congress 2026 alongside the Met-HeFT trial. The investigators reported the same conclusion as Met-HeFT: no significant difference in cardiovascular outcomes with metformin in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, and no significant effect in established ischaemic heart disease. The ESC press release did not report a pooled effect estimate. Source: ESC Congress 2026 press release, 30 August 2026.
