Key result
Asymptomatic children with type 1 diabetes had significantly reduced global longitudinal strain compared to healthy controls (-18.53% vs -25.52%, p<0.001), indicating early subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction.

This study aims to evaluate the utility of 2D strain echocardiography in detecting subclinical left ventricular dysfunction and its correlation with glycemic control in asymptomatic children with type 1 diabetes.
May aid early subclinical LV dysfunction detection in asymptomatic T1D children; leaves open glycemic control correlation and outcomes.
the LV contractility is a complex mechanism resulting from a threedimensional structure. Myocardial fibers are orientated in different directions and responsible for three principal types of deformation: longitudinal; radial and circumferential deformation. Myocardial strain assessment based on 2D speckle tracking analysis is a novel echocardiographic approach for a sensitive and angle-independent evaluation of myocardial deformation and an able tool to evaluate the three components of myocardial deformation. It has been shown to be the most sensitive echocardiographic tool for the detection of sub-clinical impairment of myocardial function observed in many conditions such as aortic stenosis, hypertrophic myocardiopathy and hypertension. The objective of this study was to characterize global systolic function abnormalities using 2D Strain in T1D children and to assess the relationship between these myocardial data and glycemic control.

A 2016 study conducted a cross-sectional in Type 1 Diabetes (n=44). Type 1 Diabetes vs. Healthy matched controls was evaluated on Global longitudinal strain (GLS) (p=<0.001). Asymptomatic children with type 1 diabetes had significantly reduced global longitudinal strain compared to healthy controls (-18.53% vs -25.52%, p<0.001), indicating early subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
