Studies were identified by searching Medline (to June 1999) with the terms diabetes mellitus, hypertension, blood pressure, treatment, and therapy. Bibliographies of relevant studies were also checked. English language studies were selected if they were randomised controlled trials of >12 months duration that compared the effects of active drug treatments with placebo on morbidity and mortality in patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Data were extracted on patient characteristics, follow up period, blood pressure, rate of patients continuing to receive monotherapy, and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. 8 studies (5244 patients) met the selection criteria. 3 studies compared 2 active treatments, 1 study reported … [1]: {openurl}?query=rft.jtitle%253DArchives%2Bof%2BInternal%2BMedicine%26rft.stitle%253DArch%2BIntern%2BMed%26rft.issn%253D0003-9926%26rft.aulast%253DGrossman%26rft.auinit1%253DE.%26rft.volume%253D160%26rft.issue%253D16%26rft.spage%253D2447%26rft.epage%253D2452%26rft.atitle%253DHigh%2BBlood%2BPressure%2Band%2BDiabetes%2BMellitus%253A%2BAre%2BAll%2BAntihypertensive%2BDrugs%2BCreated%2BEqual%253F%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Adoi%252F10.1001%252Farchinte.160.16.2447%26rft_id%253Dinfo%253Apmid%252F10979055%26rft.genre%253Darticle%26rft_val_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Ajournal%26ctx_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ver%253DZ39.88-2004%26url_ctx_fmt%253Dinfo%253Aofi%252Ffmt%253Akev%253Amtx%253Actx [2]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=10.1001/archinte.160.16.2447&link_type=DOI [3]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=10979055&link_type=MED&atom=%2Febmed%2F6%2F2%2F44.atom [4]: /lookup/external-ref?access_num=000089165900003&link_type=ISI
