Simple attachment to the Sucksmith ring balance for use at low temperatures An apparatus is described which permits specimen ten%peratures steady to within 0.5" K over a continuous range between 20 and 300" K to be obtained in the Sucksmith ring balance. In the design, the primary requirement was that the apparatus should be capable of use within a small space.A magnet pole gap of no greater than about 17 mm was available, and to allow satisfactory measurement of magnetization using the Sucksmith ring balance an internal free diameter of no less than 8 mm was desirable. Also, the system had to be economical in its consumption of cooling liquid. The general layout of the system is shown in Fig. 1.There are two co-axial tubes, both closed at their lower ends.
