The effect on the polarization of the transmitted light of reflexions at the film surface in polarizing prisms is discussed. It is shown that for the Glan type of prism (Glan-Thompson and Glan-Foucault) no depolarization effects occur when rays incident and emergent within the effective polarizing aperture are considered. The effects of various errors in construction on the performance of the prism are considered, and various optical methods of testing the prism are outlined.
