A chlorophyll a —protein complex enriched in photosystem II centers has been studied by flash absorption spectroscopy. The chain of carriers D 1 ... P-680 ... PQ 1 behaves as in Tris-treated chloroplasts. The complex contains about 60 chlorophylls per active P -680 or PQ P The secondary plastoquinone is absent or inactive and PQ - 1 is directly reoxidized by ferricyanide. The coupling between D1 and P-680 is not affected by treatment with 6 M urea. The carotenoid triplet state was formed in the complex, but no evidence could be obtained for its specific formation in a back-reaction of the primary radical pair.
