Metastasis to the larynx is extremely rare, with cutaneous melanomas and hypernephromas being the most common primary sources reported in the literature.
A patient with laryngeal metastasis from an adenocarcinoma of the colon is described. Metastasis to the larynx did not occur in 490 other patients with laryngeal cancers examined at the Mayo Clinic between 1960 and 1970. In the cases reported in the literature, cutaneous melanomas and hypernephromas were the most common types of tumors associated with metastasis to the larynx. Embolization of tumor cells through the communicating supraclavicular and subglottic lymphatic vessels provides a mode of spread.
