Historical analysis reveals how heating systems and landscape access shaped suburban floor plans for middle-class residents, highlighting early experiments in modern residential reform.
This paper examines the development of suburban residential areas in Dairen in the early 1920s, focusing on the emergence of housing and lifestyle improvement movements. It situates this process within the broader context of modern Japanese housing expansion overseas and the urban formation of Dairen. The study demonstrates that the characteristics of suburban housing floor plans were influenced by local heating systems. Furthermore, the development of these suburban areas provided the middle class with a residential environment integrated with moutain, river and sea. Suburban housing of this period also presents early examples and experiments in housing improvement.
