Key result
Exposure to blood products in hemophiliacs was associated with a 58.4% HAV prevalence at entry and a 7.8% seroconversion rate among susceptible patients.
Why the study?
Does treatment with blood products and clotting factor concentrates increase the risk of HAV seroconversion in hemophiliacs?
Population

Comparison
Clotting factor concentrates, intravenous immune… vs Anti-HIV-negative blood donors

May warrant HAV vigilance with blood products in hemophiliacs; leaves open causal risk from observational data.

Does treatment with blood products and clotting factor concentrates increase the risk of HAV seroconversion in hemophiliacs?
Hemophiliacs have a high baseline prevalence of HAV, and seroconversion can occur following administration of intravenous immune globulin and other blood products.
Mosley et al. (1994) conducted a cohort in Hemophilia (n=339). Clotting factor concentrates and blood products vs. Anti-HIV-negative blood donors was evaluated on HAV seroconversion. Exposure to blood products in hemophiliacs was associated with a 58.4% HAV prevalence at entry and a 7.8% seroconversion rate among susceptible patients.
