To the Editor: —The editorial in the Sept 28 issue ofThe Journal(185:1037) entitled "Prevention of High Fatality Rate in Serum Hepatitis" deals with a most important subject, but unfortunately contains errors of fact and fails to provide additional data of vital importance to any physician who would attempt to carry out the suggestions made. After reviewing the article by Allen and Sayman (JAMA180:1079 [June 30] 1962) referred to in the editorial and reading the minutes of the Symposium on Gamma Globulin held in October, 1962, by the National Research Council, a document which was apparently consulted in preparation of the editorial, I offer the following comments on selected statements from the editorial: "... blood transfusion causes death in approximately one of every 150 transfusions in persons over 40 years of age as a result of serum hepatitis."
