IXTRODUCTION THE tube counter described by Geiger and Muller in 1928(1) is one of the prin6ipal contributions to the technique of nuclear physics and has been directly responsible for a large part of the knowledge which has accumulated so rapidly during the last few years. The published contributions to the technique of these counters are very numerous, many of them being of the nature of recipes. The present survey will therefore be restricted in the main to (i) systematic investigation of the behaviour of the instrument, (ii) modifications of the basic circuit designed to control this behaviour, and (iii) special types of tube counter for specific purposes.ilttention will be concentrated upon the developments of the last three or four years.
