Do isoflurane and nitrous oxide inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro and in vivo?
Nitrous oxide and isoflurane cause moderate but statistically significant inhibition of platelet aggregation, which may be clinically relevant for patients undergoing anesthesia.
Fauss et al. (1986) studied Healthy volunteers and patients undergoing anesthesia (n=36). Isoflurane and nitrous oxide vs. Oxygen-carbon dioxide (in vitro) was evaluated on ADP- and collagen-induced platelet aggregation. Isoflurane and nitrous oxide produced statistically significant inhibition of ADP-induced platelet aggregation both in vitro and in vivo.
