Apparatus is described for extending cylinders or strips and also for compressing cylinders in such a way that the load per unit of average cross-section remains adequately constant for big strains. The conditions under which this compensation is satisfactory are determined by experiment. The accuracy is adequate for most industrial rheological measurements for materials soft enough to be considered as incompressible.
