Key result
Hospitalized adult influenza patients face a ~13% mortality rate and frequent bilateral lung involvement.
Why the study?
Fewer studies have described clinical and radiological correlations in patients with confirmed H1N1 influenza admitted to the intensive care unit.
Observational (n=48)
No
In a single-center Indian cohort of patients hospitalized with H1N1 influenza, mortality was 12.5%, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome.
May warrant enhanced monitoring in similar settings; leaves open predictors of outcome in regional influenza cohorts.
Influenza is a serious respiratory illness that can be debilitating and cause complications leading to hospitalization and death. Hence many patients need ICU management and close diagnostic monitoring in swine flu isolation ward. However fewer studies have been published describing clinical and radiological correlation in confirmed patients with H1N1 influenza admitted. Therefore we have conducted study that describes the clinical and radiographic findings in confirmed H1N1 influenza patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), along with their outcome. To evaluate risk factors, clinical and radiological profile of the confirmed cases of Influenza infection. : In the retrospective observational study 48 patients of influenza, who were diagnosed and treated, will be identified from hospital records at a tertiary care Hospital. All relevant clinical, investigational and treatment data collected from the hospital records. In our study, the maximum percentage of patients was in the age range of 41-60 years with male to female ratio of 1.52:1. All study patients had with fever (100%) while Cough, sputum production, wheezing, and breathlessness were other presenting symptoms. Crepitation was observed as a major sign. Other signs were pedal edema, anemia, cyanosis etc. Comorbid conditions were most commonly diabetes followed by hypertension, CAD and TB. Evaluation of Radiological investigations showed predominantly localization of bilaterally lobes. Consolidation, reticulonodular and nodular patterns were seen on X-ray. Due to illness, mortality was seen in 6(12.5%) patient out of 48patients. In the aftermath of the pandemic, untreated H1N1 influenza an infection that, in a matter of minutes or hours, can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome Meticulous diagnosis based upon clinical signs and symptoms and biochemical and radiological examination with early treatment may further decrease the mortality rate.

Garg et al. (2024) conducted an observational in Influenza infection (n=48). RT-PCR confirmed influenza infection was evaluated on Mortality. Among 48 adult patients admitted with RT-PCR confirmed influenza, all presented with fever, 56.25% had bilateral lung involvement, and the overall mortality rate was 12.5%.
