A method is described for the measurement of amplifier noise to an accuracy of better than 1%. The method involves the determination of the ratio of noise due to the amplifier alone, and the noise due to the amplifier and a wire-wound resistance at a standard temperature. Random errors are analysed, and the effects of systematic errors are discussed. The work described in this paper forms the first stage in the development of a "Noise Thermometer" for absolute measurement of temperature.
