Macrophage elevation may mark IHD-specific inflammation in failing hearts; leaves open whether targeting macrophages alters clinical outcomes.
Observational (n=15)
p-value: p=< 0.001
Macrophage numbers are significantly increased in the failing human heart, particularly in the atria of patients with ischaemic heart disease, suggesting a role for inflammation in heart failure pathology.
Azzawi et al. (2005) conducted an observational in Ischaemic heart disease and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (n=15). Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) vs. Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) and normal control hearts was evaluated on Macrophage count (CD68 positive cells) in myocardial tissue (p=< 0.001). Ischaemic heart disease was associated with significantly more myocardial macrophages in most areas compared with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy or control hearts (P < 0.001).
