Atenolol and metoprolol do not alter exercise tolerance despite reducing blood pressure and heart rate.
Why the study?
Does beta-adrenoceptor blockade with atenolol or metoprolol CR/ZOK affect cardiovascular response to exercise and exercise tolerance in healthy women aged 50-70 years?

Does beta-adrenoceptor blockade with atenolol or metoprolol CR/ZOK affect cardiovascular response to exercise and exercise tolerance in healthy women aged 50-70 years?
In healthy older women, one week of beta-blockade with atenolol or metoprolol CR/ZOK altered cardiovascular hemodynamics during exercise but did not significantly impair overall exercise tolerance.

Short-term beta-blockade preserves exercise tolerance in healthy women aged 50-70; extends RCT data to this older female demographic.
Patrick et al. (1990) conducted an RCT in Healthy (n=12). Atenolol and Metoprolol CR/ZOK vs. Placebo was evaluated on Cardiovascular responses to exercise and exercise tolerance. A 1-week treatment with 50 mg atenolol or 100 mg metoprolol CR/ZOK did not greatly affect exercise tolerance in 12 healthy women aged 50-70 years, despite reducing blood pressure and heart rate.
