Prophylactic edoxaban shows 0% symptomatic VTE recurrence in hip fracture patients with asymptomatic distal DVT.
Why the study?
There are no clear recommendations for anticoagulation in asymptomatic isolated distal DVT during the perioperative hip fracture period, where thrombus extension risk is high but therapeutic anticoagulation raises bleeding concerns.
Does prophylactic edoxaban prevent symptomatic VTE in perioperative hip fracture patients with asymptomatic isolated distal DVT?
Cohort (n=74)
No
Does prophylactic edoxaban prevent symptomatic VTE in perioperative hip fracture patients with asymptomatic isolated distal DVT?
Prophylactic-dose edoxaban appears safe and effective for preventing symptomatic VTE in patients with asymptomatic isolated distal DVT following hip fracture surgery.
Supports prophylactic edoxaban post-hip fracture; leaves open need for randomized confirmation before practice change.

Ishikawa et al. (2025) conducted a cohort in Asymptomatic isolated distal deep vein thrombosis in perioperative hip fracture (n=74). Edoxaban was evaluated on Recurrence of symptomatic VTE at 3 months. Prophylactic edoxaban for asymptomatic isolated distal DVT in perioperative hip fracture patients resulted in no recurrences of symptomatic VTE at 3 months.
