Acute isovolumic anaemia lowers aortic impedance and increases HR, SV, and LV work.
Why the study?
Does acute isovolumic anaemia alter aortic input impedance and left ventricular energetics in anaesthetised dogs?
Does acute isovolumic anaemia alter aortic input impedance and left ventricular energetics in anaesthetised dogs?
Acute isovolumic anaemia induces a hyperdynamic circulatory state with increased left ventricular work driven by cardiac sympathetic drive, without compromising the efficiency of heart-aorta decoupling.

Sympathetic drive mediates anemia-induced LV work increases in dogs; hypothesis-generating for human aortic impedance and energetics.
CLARKE et al. (1978) studied Acute isovolumic anaemia (n=12). Isovolumic exchange-transfusion with Dextran 70 vs. Bleeding and immediate replacement of shed blood was evaluated on Ascending aortic impedance spectra and left ventricular energetics. Acute isovolumic anaemia induced by Dextran 70 exchange-transfusion significantly decreased impedance modulus at zero frequency and increased heart rate, stroke volume, and left ventricular work.
