Key result
Moderate-to-severe PAH in dogs is linked to an ~82% higher right atrial area index versus controls.
Why the study?
Does the echocardiographic right atrial area (RAA) index correlate with pulmonary arterial hypertension severity and right-sided congestive heart failure in dogs?
Population
119 client-owned dogs (48 with pulmonary arterial hypertension, 71 controls)
Comparison
Echocardiographic evaluation of right atrial… vs Control dogs without PAH, and comparison across…

Right atrial area index was associated with pulmonary hypertension severity in dogs; leaves open its role in predicting right-sided heart failure.
Observational (n=119)
Does the echocardiographic right atrial area (RAA) index correlate with pulmonary arterial hypertension severity and right-sided congestive heart failure in dogs?
p-value: p=< 0.001
The right atrial area index is a useful echocardiographic parameter for evaluating right atrial size and predicting right-sided congestive heart failure in dogs with pulmonary hypertension.
Vezzosi et al. (2018) conducted an observational in Pulmonary arterial hypertension (n=119). Moderate to severe pulmonary arterial hypertension vs. Mild pulmonary arterial hypertension or healthy controls was evaluated on Right atrial area (RAA) index (p=< 0.001). The right atrial area index was significantly higher in dogs with moderate (13.3 cm2/m2) and severe (12.1 cm2/m2) pulmonary arterial hypertension compared to controls (7.3 cm2/m2; P<0.001).
