Key result
Pathological but not exercise hypertrophy increases myocardial transcapillary exchange, widening pore radius by ~43%.
Why the study?
Does pathological or exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy alter myocardial transcapillary exchange in dogs?
Population
Anesthetized dogs with intact, pump-perfused, working hearts
Comparison
Exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy and… vs Control hearts
Design

Pathological but not exercise hypertrophy may increase myocardial capillary permeability in dogs; leaves open relevance to human cardiac remodeling.
Does pathological or exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy alter myocardial transcapillary exchange in dogs?
Pathological cardiac hypertrophy due to tricuspid insufficiency, but not exercise-induced hypertrophy, increases myocardial transcapillary exchange in dogs.
Laughlin et al. (1975) studied Cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy (exercise and pathological) vs. Control hearts was evaluated on Myocardial extractions, capillary clearances, and permeability surface area products of urea, sucrose, and inulin. Pathological cardiac hypertrophy increased myocardial transcapillary exchange compared to controls (equivalent pore radius increased from 70 to 100 A), whereas exercise hypertrophy did not.
