May guide preclinical atrial elastance research; human translation and clinical relevance remain untested.
The instantaneous pressure-volume relationship of the right atrium during isovolumic contraction is quasi-linear, with contractility enhancement increasing the slope at end-systole.
Lau et al. (1979) studied this question. Epinephrine or Ca2+ vs. Spontaneous regular sinus rhythm with no inotropic intervention was evaluated on Instantaneous pressure-volume relationship (slope K and volume axis intercept VD). In a canine heart preparation, the right atrial pressure-volume relationship was quasi-linear, and enhancement of contractility with epinephrine or Ca2+ significantly increased the slope K at end-systole.
