Early-stage hepatic fibrosis is linked to ~2-fold higher serum thrombopoietin versus cirrhosis or healthy volunteers.
Observational (n=78)
Decreased production of thrombopoietin as chronic viral hepatitis progresses to cirrhosis may contribute to the development of thrombocytopenia.

May link declining thrombopoietin to thrombocytopenia in cirrhosis; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before clinical use.
Tsunehisa Kawasaki (1999) conducted an observational in Chronic viral hepatitis and liver cirrhosis (n=78). Hepatic fibrosis stage vs. Healthy volunteers and cirrhosis patients was evaluated on Serum thrombopoietin levels. Early-stage hepatic fibrosis was associated with significantly higher serum thrombopoietin levels (2.50 fmol/ml) compared to cirrhosis (1.21 fmol/ml) or healthy volunteers (1.26 fmol/ml).
