Key result
External pacing maximizes resting CO, while exercise boosts SV ~43% during fixed-rate pacing.

How does varying ventricular rate and exercise affect cardiac output and stroke volume in a patient with complete heart block?
In a patient with complete heart block, optimal cardiac output was achieved at a paced rate of 75 bpm, and the patient demonstrated the ability to significantly increase stroke volume during exercise at a fixed heart rate.
Gaal et al. (1964) conducted a case report in Complete heart block (n=1). Varying heart rate via external cardiac pacemaker and exercise was evaluated on Cardiac output and stroke volume. Increasing heart rate via an external pacemaker maximized cardiac output and stroke volume at 75 bpm, while stroke volume increased 43% with exercise at a fixed rate of 68 bpm.
