Sheep should be prioritized over dogs for coronary ligation MI-HF models; leaves open translation to other species or clinical research.
This study demonstrates that sheep are a more suitable animal model than dogs for studying myocardial infarction with heart failure via coronary artery ligation.
Kim et al. (2003) studied Myocardial infarction (n=14). Sequential ligation of the left anterior descending artery and its diagonal branch vs. Simultaneous ligation (control) and cross-species comparison (dog vs. sheep) was evaluated on Hemodynamic, ultrasonographic and pathological evaluations. Sequential coronary artery ligation produced transmural infarcts and hemodynamic failure in sheep, whereas dogs showed only mild changes despite 100% survival (7/7), making dogs an unsuitable model.
