Isoflurane preconditioning alters sarcolemmal KATP sensitivity in rats; leaves open whether this mechanism confers clinical cardioprotection.
In vivo preconditioning with isoflurane decreases the sensitivity of sarcolemmal KATP channels to ATP and ADP inhibition, providing a potential mechanism for the early memory of anesthetic-induced myocardial protection.
Stadnicka et al. (2006) studied this question. Isoflurane vs. Control non-preconditioned rat hearts was evaluated on Sensitivity of the sarcolemmal KATP channel to intracellular adenosine nucleotides. In vivo preconditioning by isoflurane decreased the sensitivity of the sarcolemmal KATP channel to ATP by 12-fold and to ADP by 3-fold in rat hearts.
