Does lipopolysaccharide exacerbate myocardial dysfunction and cell injury in a rabbit model of acute ischemia?
High doses of endotoxin exacerbate cardiac dysfunction and injury during acute myocardial ischemia, an effect that appears to be mediated by TNF-alpha.
Nader et al. (2015) studied Myocardial ischemia and endotoxemia (n=120). Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) vs. Normal saline (Sham and Ischemia controls) was evaluated on Ventricular contractility (dp/dt during systole) and cellular injury (cardiac troponin I). Pretreatment with higher doses of lipopolysaccharide suppressed myocardial contractility and increased cellular injury, whereas lower doses had no deleterious effect in a rabbit model of ischemia-reperfusion.
