Combining lovastatin with clarithromycin or azithromycin linked to reversible rhabdomyolysis.
Why the study?
Does the concomitant use of clarithromycin or azithromycin with lovastatin increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis?
Case Report (n=2)
Does the concomitant use of clarithromycin or azithromycin with lovastatin increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis?
The concomitant use of lovastatin and newer macrolide antibiotics like clarithromycin or azithromycin may precipitate rhabdomyolysis.

Potential interaction warrants monitoring with lovastatin-macrolide co-use; leaves open incidence and causality pending controlled studies.
John W. Grunden (1997) conducted a case report in Rhabdomyolysis (n=2). Clarithromycin and azithromycin (concomitant with lovastatin) was evaluated on Rhabdomyolysis. Concomitant use of lovastatin and newer macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin or azithromycin) precipitated rhabdomyolysis in two patients, which resolved following intravenous hydration.
