May reflect compensatory mechanisms in aged rodent hearts; extends animal data on ANP but leaves open clinical translation.

Younes et al. (1995) studied Cardiac hypertrophy and aging. Aging (18 to 24 months) vs. 6-month-old rats was evaluated on Left ventricular ANP mRNA levels and ANP peptide concentrations (p=< 0.05). Aging to 22-24 months in rats was associated with a sevenfold increase in left ventricular ANP mRNA (P<0.05) and a four- to fivefold increase in ANP peptide concentration compared to 6-month-old rats.
