Attempted temporary epicardial pacing wire removal risks cardiac decompensation due to heart ensnarement.
Why the study?
Temporary epicardial pacing wires can cause various complications, but unusual complications such as cardiac ensnarement during removal are not well described.
Case Report (n=1)
Highlights a rare complication of temporary epicardial pacing wire removal in children, suggesting smaller loops in the pericardium may prevent heart ensnarement.

Caution advised during temporary epicardial pacing wire removal in children; leaves open whether smaller pericardial loops prevent ensnarement.
Bolton et al. (1992) conducted a case report in Complication of temporary epicardial pacing wires (n=1). Temporary epicardial pacing wire was evaluated on Cardiac decompensation during attempted removal. Attempted removal of a temporary epicardial pacing wire resulted in cardiac decompensation due to the heart being ensnared by the wire.
