Right thoracotomy MVR improves heart failure symptoms to NYHA class I in a post-CABG case.
Why the study?
Reoperation for ischemic mitral regurgitation after prior coronary artery bypass grafting carries risks that may be mitigated by alternative surgical approaches.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Mitral valve replacement via a right thoracotomy approach is a feasible and effective strategy for patients with ischemic mitral regurgitation and prior CABG, avoiding the risks associated with repeat median sternotomy.
May offer alternative access in select post-CABG reoperations; Level 5 data leaves comparative safety and efficacy open.

Ueki et al. (2014) conducted a case report in Ischemic mitral regurgitation (n=1). Mitral valve replacement via right thoracotomy was evaluated on Postoperative recovery and heart failure symptom improvement. Mitral valve replacement via right thoracotomy was successfully performed in an 81-year-old woman with ischemic mitral regurgitation after previous CABG, improving heart failure symptoms to NYHA class I.
