Observational (n=32)
Does intravenous atropine cause an abnormal heart rate response in patients with Down's syndrome compared to controls?
Patients with Down's syndrome exhibit a pharmacogenetic abnormality characterized by hyper-reactivity to the cardioacceleratory effects of atropine.
Harris et al. (1968) conducted an observational in Down's syndrome (n=32). Intravenous atropine vs. Retardates without the syndrome and normal subjects was evaluated on Heart rate response to intravenous atropine. Intravenous atropine elicited a markedly increased (twice normal or greater) sensitivity to cardioacceleratory effects in patients with Down's syndrome compared to controls.
