Superimposed preeclampsia in chronic hypertension is linked to decreased early third-trimester renin and aldosterone.
Cohort (n=25)
The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is suppressed and atrial natriuretic factor is increased in the early third trimester in pregnant women with chronic hypertension who develop superimposed preeclampsia, which may aid in early recognition.

May signal superimposed preeclampsia risk via RAAS markers in chronic hypertension; leaves open prospective validation before clinical adoption.
August et al. (1990) conducted a cohort in Chronic hypertension in pregnancy (n=25). Development of superimposed preeclampsia vs. No development of superimposed preeclampsia was evaluated on Changes in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and blood pressure. In pregnant women with chronic hypertension who developed superimposed preeclampsia, plasma renin activity and urine aldosterone excretion decreased in the early third trimester.
