Key result
Premature male CAD is linked to elevated MMP-9 and TIMP-1 and reduced MMP-2, MMP-3, and TIMP-2.
Why the study?
The clinical significance of circulating matrix metalloproteinases and their tissue inhibitors in patients with premature coronary atherosclerosis was unclear.
Population
53 male patients with premature stable coronary artery disease and 133 age-matched control males
Comparison
Patients with premature coronary atherosclerosis vs age-matched controls
Design
Case-control study

Altered MMP/TIMP levels should not yet change practice in premature CAD; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation.
Case-Control (n=186)
p-value: p=<0.001
Circulating levels of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors are significantly altered in men with premature coronary atherosclerosis and correlate with plasma lipoprotein cholesterol levels.
Noji et al. (2001) conducted a case-control in Premature coronary atherosclerosis (n=186). Premature coronary atherosclerosis vs. Age-matched control males was evaluated on Plasma levels of MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 (p=<0.001). Premature coronary atherosclerosis in males was associated with significantly higher plasma MMP-9 and TIMP-1, and lower MMP-2, MMP-3, and TIMP-2 levels compared to age-matched controls (p<0.001).
