Artificial ectopic beats alter Poincaré HRV indices, with SD1 proving more sensitive than SD2.
Why the study?
The effect of ectopic beats and editing methods on Poincaré plot based HRV indices SD1 and SD2 has not been fully assessed.
How do ectopic beats and editing methods affect Poincaré plot-based HRV indices SD1 and SD2 in healthy subjects?
How do ectopic beats and editing methods affect Poincaré plot-based HRV indices SD1 and SD2 in healthy subjects?
SD1 is more sensitive to ectopic beats than SD2 in Poincaré plot-based HRV analysis, and editing methods are more effective for longer RR interval datasets.

May require ectopic beat editing for reliable SD1 in long-term HRV; leaves open optimal protocols for clinical populations.
In this study, the effect of ectopic beats and its editing methods on the Poincaré plot based HRV indices SD1 and SD2 have been assessed. Ectopic free RR interval time series of length 900, 500 and 300 for 10 healthy subjects were analysed by inserting low, medium and high level artificial ectopic beats. SD1 was found to be more sensitive to ectopic beats than SD2. The effect has been found to be the function of amount and level of ectopic beats and RR interval data length. The editing methods are found to be more efficient for long-term data.

Singh et al. (2011) studied Healthy (n=10). Artificial ectopic beats and editing methods vs. Ectopic free RR interval time series was evaluated on Poincaré plot based HRV indices SD1 and SD2. Artificial ectopic beats affected Poincaré plot-based HRV indices, with SD1 being more sensitive than SD2, and editing methods proving more efficient for long-term data.
