Selective IL-6 induction by synoviocyte-monocyte co-culture is hypothesis-generating; leaves open translation to human inflammatory disease.
Effect estimate: 4-fold increase in IL-6
In vitro co-culture demonstrates that monocyte-fibroblast interaction is sufficient to drive IL-6 production but not IL-1beta or TNF-alpha in the inflamed synovium.
Chen et al. (1998) studied Inflamed synovium. Co-culture of fibroblast-like synoviocytes and differentiated U937 cells vs. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes alone was evaluated on IL-6, IL-1beta, and TNF-alpha release (4-fold increase in IL-6). Co-culture of fibroblast-like synoviocytes with differentiated U937 cells induced a 4-fold increase in IL-6 release but failed to release detectable levels of IL-1beta and TNF-alpha.
