Key result
Carrying the APO E4 allele was associated with significantly higher levels of LDL cholesterol (117.69 mg/dl vs 107.81 mg/dl) and total cholesterol compared to non-carriers in a north Indian population.
Why the study?
Apolipoprotein E plays a key role in lipid metabolism, obesity, diabetes, and coronary heart disease, but its genotype distribution and lipid effects in north Indian obese and non-obese populations were unclear.
Does APO E genotype affect plasma lipid levels in obese and non-obese individuals in a North Indian population?

The APO E gene polymorphism, specifically the E4 allele, is associated with an atherogenic lipid profile in obese individuals in the North Indian population.
APOE4 carriage may link to higher LDL in North Indians; leaves open whether genotyping informs lipid management.
Introduction: Apolipo protein E (apo E) plays key role in lipid metabolism, obesity and accordingly in development of diabetes and coronary heart disease (CHD).Methods: Apo E polymorphism was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in 80 non-obese and 80 obese patients was collected from northern India.Levels of lipids and glucose were determined in these subjects. Results: The genotype and allele frequencies of APO E polymorphism in non-obese showed no significant statistical difference compared to obese patients. In obese group, the subjects with E4E4 genotype had significantly lower levels of HDL and higher levels of triglycerides, LDL, VLDL, HDL/LDL, TC/HDL and TG/HDL compared to E2E3/E3E3 genotype.E4 allelic carrier had significantly higher levels of LDL, Total cholesterol and LDL/HDL compared to non-carrier. Conclusions:The APO E gene polymorphism is associated with altered plasma levels of HDL, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides in north Indian population.

Rajesh Thakur (2017) conducted a case-control in Obesity and Dyslipidemia (n=160). APO E4 carrier status vs. APO E4 non-carrier status was evaluated on LDL cholesterol levels (mg/dl) (p=0.0465). Carrying the APO E4 allele was associated with significantly higher levels of LDL cholesterol (117.69 mg/dl vs 107.81 mg/dl) and total cholesterol compared to non-carriers in a north Indian population.
