Key result
Hypoparathyroidism affects ~98% of chronic hemodialysis inpatients and is linked to poor performance status.
Why the study?
The actual status of hypoparathyroidism in inpatients on chronic hemodialysis was not well characterized.
Cross-Sectional (n=45)
No
There is a very high incidence of hypoparathyroidism among hospitalized chronic hemodialysis patients, likely driven by immobility-induced hypercalcemia suppressing PTH secretion.
Hypoparathyroidism prevalence in hospitalized hemodialysis inpatients should not yet change practice; leaves open whether poor performance status drives PTH suppression.

Usami et al. (1998) conducted a cross-sectional in Chronic hemodialysis (n=45). Chronic hemodialysis was evaluated on Incidence of hypoparathyroidism (intact-PTH < 160 pg/ml). Among inpatients on chronic hemodialysis, 97.8% had hypoparathyroidism, and poor performance status was significantly associated with absolute hypoparathyroidism (p=0.039).
