Acute thyroid hormone deficiency is linked to a ~28% lower peak LV diastolic filling rate.
Why the study?
The effect of acute thyroid hormone deficiency on left ventricular diastolic filling was not well characterized.
Does acute hypothyroidism reduce left ventricular diastolic relaxation in athyreotic patients without cardiovascular disease?
Observational (n=9)
Does acute hypothyroidism reduce left ventricular diastolic relaxation in athyreotic patients without cardiovascular disease?
Effect estimate: delta = 41 +/- 13%
Absolute Event Rate: 287% vs 400%
p-value: p=<0.01
Acute hypothyroidism significantly decreases the rate of active left ventricular diastolic relaxation in patients without underlying cardiovascular disease.

Acute hypothyroidism may impair LV diastolic filling in athyreotic patients without CVD; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective confirmation before practice change.
Wieshammer et al. (1989) conducted an observational in Athyreotic without cardiovascular disease (n=9). Acute thyroid hormone deficiency vs. Euthyroid state on replacement therapy was evaluated on Peak filling rate (delta = 41 +/- 13%, p=<0.01). Acute thyroid hormone deficiency significantly decreased the peak left ventricular diastolic filling rate compared to the euthyroid state (287 vs. 400 mL/s, p<0.01).
