Sudafed PE is linked to recurrent stress cardiomyopathy via sympathetic nervous system activation.
Why the study?
Medications that act on the sympathetic nervous system, such as phenylephrine in Sudafed PE, can cause stress cardiomyopathy, but recurrent cases induced by Sudafed PE are not well documented.
Case Report (n=1)
Over-the-counter medications containing phenylephrine, such as Sudafed PE, can trigger recurrent stress cardiomyopathy.

This medication can potentiate arrhythmia, hypertension, and myocardial infarction. It is becoming increasingly recognized that medications that act on the sympathetic nervous system can cause stress cardiomyopathy. Objective: To report a patient who developed recurrent stress cardiomyopathy after using Sudafed PE.Case Report: A 63-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and prior tobacco use went to the local hospital's emergency department for unremitting chest pain; she had new ST-segment elevations in leads I and aVL and ...References1. Zlotnick et al. (2012) conducted a case report in Recurrent stress cardiomyopathy (n=1). Sudafed PE (phenylephrine) was evaluated on Recurrent stress cardiomyopathy. A 63-year-old woman developed recurrent stress cardiomyopathy after using Sudafed PE, demonstrating that medications acting on the sympathetic nervous system can trigger this condition.
