Why the study?
Maternal obesity is associated with increased childhood cardiometabolic risk, but whether maternal lifestyle intervention can mitigate cardiovascular risk in offspring was unclear.
Does maternal lifestyle intervention during obese pregnancy prevent cardiac remodeling in 3-year-old offspring?
Population
3-year-old children of pregnant women with obesity or normal BMI from one trial centre
Comparison
Maternal diet and physical activity intervention vs standard care, plus normal BMI controls
Design
Follow-up of randomized controlled trial participants plus comparison group
Key result
A maternal lifestyle intervention of diet and physical activity during obese pregnancy prevented left ventricular concentric remodelling in 3-year-old offspring, significantly reducing interventricular septum thickness by 0.03 cm compared to standard care.

Maternal lifestyle intervention during obese pregnancy prevents left ventricular concentric remodeling in 3-year-old offspring, suggesting in utero origins of cardiovascular risk.
Taylor et al. (2022) conducted an RCT in Maternal obesity and childhood cardiac remodelling (n=121). UPBEAT lifestyle intervention (diet and physical activity) vs. Standard antenatal care was evaluated on Interventricular septum (IVS) thickness (MD -0.03 cm, 95% CI -0.05 to -0.008, p=0.008). A maternal lifestyle intervention of diet and physical activity during obese pregnancy prevented left ventricular concentric remodelling in 3-year-old offspring, significantly reducing interventricular septum thickness by 0.03 cm compared to standard care.
