Attempted Inoue balloon PMV is linked to LA thrombus despite systemic anticoagulation.
Why the study?
Left atrial thrombus formation following attempted percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty despite systemic anticoagulation is not well characterized.
Highlights the risk of rapid left atrial thrombus formation following transseptal puncture during percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty, even with systemic anticoagulation.
Alerts to rapid left atrial thrombus risk during percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty despite anticoagulation; case reports leave optimal prevention strategies open.
In this report, we describe two cases of attempted mitral valvuloplasty using an Inoue balloon in which left atrial thrombus was not present before transseptal puncture but developed within minutes of the puncture in one, and within 1 mo in the other, despite systemic anticoagulation.

Lee et al. (1994) studied this question. Attempted percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty using an Inoue balloon was associated with the development of left atrial thrombus in two cases despite systemic anticoagulation.
