Electron spin resonance from X-ray irradiated single crystals of barium sulphate (BaSO4) is obtained at room temperature and the principal g-values of the induced traps are calculated from measured data. Signals indicating five different types of traps are observed and may be identified to be VBaSO, SO (hole traps), and F, F+, α (electron traps.) From measurements of annealed crystals it can be ascertained that the electron traps are energetically deeper than the hole traps. The angular variation of the spectra shows a distinct anisotropy and furthermore an effect of site splitting resulting from the presence of inequivalent sites of traps of the same kind in the lattice. It is possible to correlate the hole traps to TL and TSEE glow curves.
