Key result
CTA detects 100% of carotid lesions found by contrast angiography and matches IVUS sensitivity.
Why the study?
The ability of CT angiography to detect carotid artery atherosclerosis compared with 3D TOF MR angiography using contrast angiography and IVUS as references was evaluated.
Does CT angiography accurately detect carotid artery atherosclerosis compared to MR angiography, contrast angiography, and IVUS in patients?

Does CT angiography accurately detect carotid artery atherosclerosis compared to MR angiography, contrast angiography, and IVUS in patients?
CT angiography is a feasible and highly sensitive non-invasive imaging modality for detecting carotid artery atherosclerosis compared to MRA, contrast angiography, and IVUS.
Berg et al. (2002) conducted an observational in carotid artery atherosclerosis (n=31). CT angiography (CTA) vs. 3D time-of-flight MR angiography (3D TOF MRA) was evaluated on detection of atherosclerotic lesions. CT angiography detected all 51 lesions found by contrast angiography and yielded a sensitivity of 96% to 100% for detecting carotid atherosclerosis compared to intravascular ultrasound.
