Key result
Guanidine inhibits poliovirus multiplication in HeLa cells, reducing TCID50 by up to ~4 logs.
Why the study?
The antiviral effect of Guanidine on poliomyelitis virus multiplication in host cells was investigated to understand its mechanism of action.
Population
HeLa cells infected with type-1, type-2, and type-3 poliomyelitis virus
Comparison
Guanidine 10-3M vs no Guanidine

Hypothesis-generating for guanidine as poliovirus antiviral; requires in vivo validation before clinical exploration.
Guanidine inhibits the intracellular multiplication of poliomyelitis virus in HeLa cells.
Ueda et al. (1961) studied Poliomyelitis virus infection (in vitro). Guanidine nitrate and Guanidine hydrochloride vs. Phosphate buffer solution was evaluated on Viral multiplication (TCID50). Guanidine at a concentration of 10^-3 M remarkably inhibited the intracellular multiplication of type-1, type-2, and type-3 strains of poliomyelitis virus in HeLa cell cultures, reducing TCID50 by 3 to 4 logs.
