Key result
SHHF/Mcc-cp myocytes show ~50% lower beta-receptor binding and reduced calcium uptake versus JCR:LA-cp cells.
Why the study?
The study aimed to compare beta adrenergic receptors, cAMP production, and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ accumulation in ventricular cardiomyocytes from obese hypertensive SHHF/Mcc-cp rats and obese normotensive JCR:LA-cp rats to understand obesity and hypertension effects on cardiac function.
Population
6 months old obese female SHHF/Mcc-cp and obese and lean female JCR:LA-cp rats
Comparison
Ventricular cardiomyocytes from obese hypertensive SHHF/Mcc-cp rats vs obese and lean normotensive JCR:LA-cp rats
Design
Comparative cellular physiology study

Impaired β-adrenergic signaling and SR Ca²⁺ uptake in HF-prone rats; leaves open mechanistic drivers of hypertension-related progression.
Hohl et al. (1993) studied Obesity and hypertension. SHHF/Mcc-cp strain (obese, hypertensive) vs. JCR:LA-cp strain (obese and lean, normotensive) was evaluated on beta Adrenergic receptor number (Bmax) and ligand affinity (Kd) for 125ICYP binding, cAMP production, and sarcoplasmic reticular 45Ca2+ uptake. Bmax and Kd for 125ICYP binding were approximately 50% lower in SHHF/Mcc-cp vs JCR:LA-cp myocytes, and sarcoplasmic reticular 45Ca2+ uptake was 35% lower.
