Reading primary science literature (PSL) can be difficult, especially for students. The CREATE (Consider, Read, Elucidate the hypotheses, Analyze and interpret the data, Think of the next Experiment) method has been used to teach undergraduate classes to read and to analyze PSL (Hoskins et al., 2007). Here, I describe how I use the CREATE method to teach my high school students how to read PSL. High school students can benefit from reading PSL, learning research methods and how to analyze and interpret various data types. I followed the overall steps of the CREATE method, making modifications to scaffold my students’ understanding and to fit within a high school block schedule. I offer suggestions for how other teachers may modify this approach for their own classrooms.
