RT-PCR detects FMDV in ~95% of suspected cattle cases, dominated by serotype O.
Why the study?
Foot and mouth disease is endemic in Bangladesh, but the distribution of specific FMD virus serotypes in infected cattle was not well characterized.
Cross-Sectional (n=97)
Yes
RT-PCR protocols successfully and rapidly detected FMD viruses and identified serotypes O, A, and Asia 1 in infected cattle in Bangladesh.

May inform serotype-specific FMD control in Bangladesh; leaves open validation in larger prospective studies.
Islam et al. (2017) conducted a cross-sectional in Foot and mouth disease (n=97). Foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) infection was evaluated on Detection and distribution of FMDV serotypes. Among 97 cattle with suspected foot and mouth disease in Bangladesh, RT-PCR identified FMDV in 94.8% of cases, with serotype O being the most prevalent (62.2%), followed by Asia1 (17.8%) and A (14.4%).
